Our Mission

Site Map At the Westmount Community shul, we are focused on the needs of our membership. Our mission: Tikkun Olam, or said in English, “Making the world a better place”. What does this mean and how do we do this? We are introspective yet fun. We laugh a lot as we celebrate our lives, those of our children, parents, family, friends and loved ones. Our membership of some 120 families comes from all walks of life and although we are all seriously committed to Torah-based observance, we recognize that we are all at different levels and therefore are all enthusiastic about uncovering the magic of our Torah.

Our Learning

Learning is the key to knowledge, and is something we take very seriously. Under the watchful eye of our Rabbi, Rabbi Yossi Michalowicz, there are classes almost every day and night of the week on a wide variety of interesting subjects. You name it, and we talk about it. Recent classes include:

  • A riveting 8-week series on Kabbalah
  • Everything one needs to know about keeping a kosher kitchen
  • The power of positive speech
  • Why do bad things happen to good people
  • Talmud for beginners – how to gain a basic appreciation
  • Hebrew 101 – now you're talking
  • The magic and myths of human sexuality – A Torah perspective
  • So you thought Judaism was sexist? Discover the reality

The list of interesting topics goes on and on and on - the more people that join our classes, the better. We love company and questions. Don't be shy.

Our Community

Since our founding in 2004, we have grown from 70 committed member families to more than 120 even more committed member families. This is a result of numerous factors including:

  • Our tireless dynamic Rabbi and Rebbetzin – Rabbi Yossi and Gail Michalowicz
  • Our innovative classes, always about the most interesting of subjects
  • Our great shabbat services – in fact there are two. We have the traditional service, as well as an educational service – bottom line is that there is something to meet everyone's needs.
  • Our community of members and friends – time and time we are told by guests and new members that we are the most friendly community they have ever met – this is something of which we are extremely proud. No visitor to our shul should be made to feel they are alone.

Our Understanding

We recognize we all come from different backgrounds, have different levels of education on Judaism and therefore have different understandings on the many interesting subjects which we study. One of the most important things we have in common is that we are serious about our Judaism. This is what makes us such a dynamic and vibrant community. Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Yossi Michalowicz, we are led according to the ways of our most precious document, the Torah. And it is with this understanding in mind that we all choose to lead our lives as well as those of our children.
